Introduction
The universe is formed matter, which formed galaxies, then
planets formed on which the chemistry of life formed simple life
forms, and evolution began. From one cell to many, life evolved,
and matter became complex. With each step it moved towards high
intelligence. It evolved from simple survival to low intelligence
that moved towards high intelligence that is shaped by its environment;
to complex intelligence that controls its environment. In the
far future intelligent life thinks that it knows how the whole
of creation works, it thinks great thoughts about shaping the
reality of its existence.
The question facing the intelligence is, does it posses enough
intelligence to know what is right, what is possible and what
should be? It is not a given that any life would know these virtues,
eventually intelligence will think it has enough intelligence
to think that it knows, even if it does not. It will be at this
point that the future of this life will hinge on its ability
to know that what they do might be wrong, dangerous and a threat
to their very existence. They will move to the edge of their
intelligence and gaze into the abyss and at that moment in their
time they will either move ahead or hold back.
Should they hear the voice of reason life will move on with out
risk, but should the voice of reason fail, the future will grow
dark and they will move into danger. It is at one of these future
times that intelligence life faces its greatest danger. They
are on the brink of discovering how to move back ward in time.
Forward has been a reality for a long time but to move backward
has until now been thought to be possible but as yet unachieved.
They stand on the brink of this achievement. They have two questions
to answer, what will happen when they go back in time and what
do they do to answer the first question? They understand what
could happen, either they go back and create a paradox such as
killing their father so they no longer exist, or they go back
and kill their father and create a new reality that has no effect
on the reality they came from. In the first scenario if they
made massive change in the past they may make massive dangerous
changes in the reality they came from, and so the smallest change
in the past changes their future, they might make changes that
result in the future precluding the invention of time travel.
Or they could go back in time and make changes that change the
future but in a reality that is not connected to the reality
that they came from.
Even harder to deal with is the view of those who send out the
time travelers into the past, they go never to be heard from
again, no word ever returns as any interaction with the past
creates a new reality. It was argued that just the act of backward
time travel was enough to disconnect the time travelers from
the point of origin.
How would the senders of the time travelers know if a paradox
was created? While no change in the past would make the sending
reality different from the point of view of the point of origin,
it could, with only a small interaction, become vastly different.
You could make random changes to see what might happen and if
the results were useless go into the past and do it again. Of
course the theories could be all wrong and the worst part is
that there was no way to ever know. There were those who thought
the very act of messing with reality was wrong, that humanity
was not wise enough to take the risk, that the creator made reality
and man was not suppose to interfere.
In the far future the Earth is spent, used up, and sick beyond
fixing. Too many humans vying for too few resources, science
can't solve all the problem of a polluted Earth and, there is
no where to go, the universe is too large, it would take too
long to search, to find a new Earth. The only hope seems to be
to travel into the past and take over an alternative Earth and
make it over into your utopia. If you make a bad change you go
back in time and try again learning from your mistakes, trying
to create an Earth that can survive the future.
The debate is between those great thinkers, the "Parodoxers",
who think that time travel to the past is dangerous, that doing
so creates paradoxes that would echo up thru the years and change
the future of those left behind, in ways difficult to predict,
and between those who think time travel backward, just the act
of back ward travel creates a new reality that constrains changes
to that new reality with out respect to the future from which
the time travelers originated. The "alternaughts",
as they were called, held that a time traveler would go into
the past and disappear forever, never to return as they would
create a new reality precluding any paradox, while the "parodoxers"
contended that the time travelers would go into the past make
changes that would result in the instant change in the future
from which they originated, changes that might be catastrophic
to those left behind. In fact the "paradoxers" held
that the father back in time a traveler went the greater the
changes would be, the more dangerous the changes would be. Why
the human race might cease to exist, or be so changed that the
returning travelers would not recognize their place of origin,
if they even still existed. The "paradoxer's" position
was one that presented a paradox in their belief, in that the
"alternaughts" would disappear when they disappeared
into the new reality they created in traveling to the past, and
so no one would be able to report back to the future of the journey.
While the "paradoxers" might not be able to return
as they might not exist any more after they made changes to the
past, or worse have no future to return to and no one to report
to. So how do you prove that back ward time travel really works,
any change that ripples back to the future would not be noticed
by those in the future as it would just always have been so to
those left behind, regardless of the degree of the change, and
any change that happens in a new reality would not occur in the
original future but would happen only in the future of the new
reality. After many decades of arguments the point was still
not won by either group, no middle ground was found and so when
the announcements was made that a group of scientist had made
a breakthrough and that backward time travel was ready for the
first test, the argument became should they proceed to the first
experimental journey and whether it should be taken at all, and
what form it should take? The fact that time travel to the past
was possible and the problems it might solve that were plaguing
humanity put pressure on to go for a "proof of theory"
journey with the least danger. It was decided that a short journey
with only a few "Timenaughts" and a tight set of rules
to minimize the danger should be taken. So it was that a journey
of one week was set up with 2 "timenaughts" that would
hopefully prove the technologies of time travel worked and, if
possible, which point of view was the truth. The day of truth
arrived and the test transpired with results that seemed to prove
the "Altnaughts" right for the "Timenaughts"
were never heard from again. Of course the "paradoxers"
said that they had created a change that resulted in the "alternaughts"
no longer existing and so in reality it proved nothing. Everyone
scratched their heads for a long while, however the problems
that humanity faced were real and seemingly unsolvable so the
argument became, might the future of another reality be worth
changing? If they went back and made very big changes in the
past and then observe the future that they created could they,
if unsuccessful, go into the past again creating an another new
reality that they could again observe and if necessary do it
again and again until they created a new reality that was better
than this one? They would not be able to go into the past to
fix the future from which they came but they could create a better
reality for another Earth's reality, was this not a good thing?
Some argued that change made in the past might be very bad for
the new reality or very good but questioned if it was fair to
inflict change that might be bad on a new reality. Slowly the
thought process became one that any change would be better than
what humanity was facing in this reality or any other new reality.
Perhaps the only escape from these problems lay in sending as
many humans into the past and creating many new realities that
they could shape, to create any future other than this one, a
future so dead ended as this one was, would be no loss. The idea
resonated and great minds and not so great minds decided that
this was the future of humanity that we would create new realities
that would make changes that could produce a better future. And
so in the end, at the end of Earths time we sent teams into the
deep past to make many new realities that would hopefully be
better. Were Humans playing God? Some thought so.
In the first part of the 21-century the conservative religious
right rose to power. Politicians used the big lie, made their
untruths believed by the masses by repeating them over and over
again until they became the truth. They brought a President down
and raised up one of their own. The largest of the lies was cover
and cause for a war. All the while self-proclaimed religious
leaders claimed that evolution was a lie that it was God that
created the world and all the life in it. The centuries that
followed almost filled in the thirty million year fossil gap
called Romer's gap with intermediate fossils proving the lie
to be just that, at least in the eyes of the evolutionists. There
were continued attempts to replace the concept of evolution with
some form of creationism. The vastness of time and the still
incomplete line of fossils gave rise to a belief that if not
God then at the least an intelligent designer was in play. It
was not accepted by paleontologists who felt that a few more
intermediate fossil finds would fill any gaps that still existed,
but still some thought that some intelligent designer was at
work. Was it some alien force or some unknown force that created
the whole of existence or at least parts of existence? Some great
intelligence that we can't understand that was responsible for
the creation of all or part of reality, others asked the question,
wouldn't that force be God? It was an open question that manifested
its self in the dogma of extremists groups. Still the question
hung in the air as yet to be answered. There were those who dedicated
themselves to protecting what God had created and vowed to stop
man from interfering by traveling to the past as they had done
with genetic experimenting. They would stop humanity from creating
a new humanity even if it was in a new reality. |

Chapter 1
The vegetation was a mostly ferns in a wide range of sizes
colors and shapes, fine green ferns, purple course ferns, small
dirty orange ferns with thick shiny stems, mixed in with very
large red ferns. At the edge of the sandy clearing were small
tree like plants with large broad leaves that cast strange shadows
as a gentle wind played across them and around small twisted
trees with little yellow green leaves. There were conifers, first
seed producing trees that while still small, towered over the
other smaller proto trees.
There was the flutter of insect wings, dragonflies of many shapes,
sizes, and colors some that seemed to glow in the bright warm
morning sun. There were insects of every description crawling
jumping and flying, filling the air with their buzzing, humming,
clicking, and chirping that did not quite drown out the sound
of the river beyond the trees, and ferns. The scampering sound
of small multi colored scaled reptiles some on four short stubby
legs that not so long ago had been fins that pushed them thru
water, and a few standing on two hind legs that freed their front
legs to grasp. There were small fury proto mammals sniffing around
crawling in and out of their burros, jumping on resting insects
then running away with their prize to find a safe place to eat
them. The blue sky was glowing with the light of the fresh morning
sun. Sounds of the night were fading and day sounds were rising,
diverse like some insane oriental symphonic music. The smells
were complex, rotting plants, dark soil all cooking in the hot
sun.
There was no flashing of lightning, no sound of its arrival,
just the sudden appearance of a two hundred foot long yellow
oval shape of frozen water oxygen and chemicals, all contained
within a powerful force field that added a sharp smell of ozone
to the other smells that filled the air. It was semi transparent
and it was hard to understand the shapes within.
The oxygenized ice within the oval shaped tine ship began to
melt and flow to a storage area under the floor. With in ten
minuets it was almost gone, revealing a platform about 140 feet
along the long dimension supporting a number of large smooth
dark containers and 13 humans dressed in shinny protective suits
lying on brown couches that were designed to keep them alive
while the "Timenaughts" were in cryogenic stasis as
they traveled through time. They were all still as the last of
the frozen liquid melted and drained away under the platform
to bottom of the force field, but with in a minuet after the
ice disappeared some movement began. Only a few of the crew,
stiff at first but then they were all moving, one by one they
each reached for the masks that covered their faces, soon revealing
the fact that they were ten male and three female humans. As
they removed their headgear they looked around and at each other
in pure warm amazement that they had arrived. It had worked,
they were in the very distant past, the future was yet to happen,
they were on a fresh clean Earth near the end of the Permian,
they were in control of their future, their new future. It was
just outside the now transparent force field in living color
and they found it hard to not stare at it.
They began to set up camp within the protection of the force
field, first stowing the cryo couches within the platform, then
unpacking crates and setting up each of their support equipment.
Speaking in quiet voices punctuated by the sounds of the unpacking,
they were awed and they were also each deeply sad at the loss
of the future they came from, as they knew that they were on
a one-way trip. They were aware that they were the only humans
here in this past what ever happened now it was all up to them.
What they were about to attempt had never been done by humanity
before, discounting what ever had happened to the first test
team. What they had was a chance to fix the future even if it
was not the future they had journeyed from.
General William Mathures Log Day 1
We have successfully traveled several hundred million years
into the past, how many years we do not exactly know yet. Our
arrival was with out problems, and so far the force field is
keeping us from becoming contaminated by this past, we will soon
investigate our new environment and determine if we are in any
danger from microorganisms. We were sterile when we left so
we should present no problems of contamination to this environment,
if we are safe and do not face any danger, we will begin to expand
our force field and begin exploring our new world with the goal
being a human colony.
Tomorrow we will give Dr Wilson Grace the go ahead to set
up the deep space probe, which should give us a better idea of
when we are, by the position of the asteroid that is due to strike
Earth off the coast of what one day will be Australia ending
the Permian age and beginning the largest extinction ever called
the "Bedout" event. We will attempt to deflect it making
the first large change to our new Earth and to our new future.
Our little colony will begin to set up our breeding nursery that
will produce the humans that will populate this reality. We have
a powerful generator that will provide us with the power to produce
enough resources to start our factories. Within a few months
there won't be any thing that we can't produce. We have brought
nano technology with us and we have the ability to produce more
so we will have the benefit of 3rd day rejuvenation something
we have all used for all of our long healthy lives. The cost
of our future wont be spent on pollution, we have the best technology
our original future could create all be it too late for that
future, it should insure a healthy successful future for humanity.
I can remember sitting at that huge square table in the
central government building during the planning stage of this
journey and wondering at the audacity of humanity to be making
the plans that we were debating. On my left and right were the
theorists whose theories would shape our new future and our mission
to the past, this past that we are now about to change. This
project that was to create a mission that had the best chance
to make a future that would preclude the future and problems
we left behind, a future that was a failure. I remember listening
to the different theories that the experts were exposing, were
we really so sure that we could make such changes as they were
proposing and create a future that would be any better than what
we had. I was sure we needed to faced the reality that the problem
was humanity it self, we were the problem and no change to the
past would produce any changes that would correct our inherit
faults. We needed to make changes to humans that we were not
prepared to make, to produce a new race of humans that would
not go down the same path of evolution. Sending modern man back
to create a colony in the far distant past would create a future
in which we might not be any different unless we were to found
a new humanity with new visions and beliefs. To just send us
back with the power to establish humanity would risk creating
a future of supper humans with powers being like that of spoiled
child gods.
As I sat there at those meetings I saw that what we had
was an opportunity to try some great experiments that could reach
a level of success depending on what your definition of success
was. It was to that end that this is the first of many time journeys
to be undertaken. We were given a very detailed goal and we were
trained and educated to make it happen, and more important we
were under instruction as to what we should do if it did not
work as planed, after all what ever the out come of this first
attempt we simply had to go back and try again. The problem I
had was that we could go back and try again but this new reality
we created would remain and the people we left behind in this
new future would have to live out their existence that we imposed
on them, in this future we created no matter how good or bad
it turns out to be. I was never happy about that fact.
Our first day was one of true wonder hardly a moment went
by that some strange creature did not walk, crawl, or fly by.
Each sighting was recorded and identified as best Dr Grace Winthrope
head of paleo biology research could. Several very strange creatures
showed up that did not look like any fossil ever found, Dr Winthrope
was truly beside herself. The diverse flying insects are a big
surprise and we all agreed that the fossil record was not very
complete. Some of the larger reptilian creatures that happened
by were covered in what looked like small feathers of bright
colors, red, blue, and several shades of green. They were not
used for flying at least not yet, and the skin of several was
purple and covered with patches of short yellow or brown fur.
The pattern was effective as camouflage.
We took samples of the air and dirt and subjected them to every
test that we were given to determine if we were at any risk from
pathogens. All the tests came back clean or rated as non-lethal.
It was now safe to spend time outside as long as we do a simple
decontamination when we returne.
We began to investigate the environment. We spent a lot of time
looking at the creatures that were part of the landscape. We
only had to run to the safety of our force field once. Tom Chambers
and I were running the water pipe to the fast moving stream nearby.
Dr Winthrope had instructed us to look under flat rocks in the
water to see if there were small flat lava of Plecoptera, Stone
Flies that would tell us that the water was good clean water
as they were a good indicator of clean healthy water. We found
them and placed the intake pipe in a deep part of the rushing
water. As we walked back to the camp we almost fell over a creature
out of some horror story, we learned later that it was a giant
frog that we encountered lying in ambush, when it opened its
mouth it revealed huge sharp teeth. Tom jumped a little higher
than I did but I beat him back to the safety of the camp. As
for the vegetation, there are so many types of ferns some are
fine and delicate while some are thick and quite tall, all come
in a wide range of sizes and colors, many seem to be dying from
the lack of rain as we are in the northern central lands of Pangea
what would one day be western north America where the moisture
does not reach due to the distance from the coast and the early
stages of the Rockies keeping the moisture on the coast, water
does not fall here as rain. Far to the west and further to the
east and to the south the giant single sea should be lapping
on the sandy shore where we would expect to see amphibians walking
and crawling out of the sea to lay their eggs on the land, many
would be the victims of small savage reptilian predators, forcing
evolutionary changes on the survivors. On that same land the
first mammals were also vying for survival, giving birth to their
young alive so they might survive and populate the empty lands.
I have to remind my self that those creatures we see around camp
only recently crawled out of the sea to populate the land. Most
important some where in deep space was at least one huge asteroid
with Earth's name on it, a rock probably in excess of 35 miles
in diameter that would create a crater two hundred kilometer
in diameter when it hit Earth near what would become the Australia
continent on the northwestern shore. It would wipe out most of
life unless we time travelers can find it in time and deflect
it.
